Favorite Things: A Personal Workshop

25 favorite things — right now

A FREE PRINTABLE

I call it a personal workshop on purpose. A printable is something you download and look at in a few months when you remember. A workshop is something you show up for — you make the time, you sit down, and you attend. This one has one attendee, and she is the point.

Enjoy every minute of the experience.

Two pages, large print, with a few playful nudges for when you get stuck — vanilla or chocolate, beach or poolside, pie or cake.

Nothing is too big, too small, too ordinary, or too random.

What to put on your favorite things list

Twenty-five is more than you think. The first eight come quickly. After that you have to stop and genuinely consider — and that part is the good part.

Let it be small. The smell of your favorite food cooking. A really good latte. Movie theater popcorn. A shower with great water pressure. A beautifully made bed. Dark fudgy brownies.

And let it be big. A long luxurious cruise someplace beautiful. Something you want to make. A way you would like your whole life to feel.

You are not in the background

When you’re the one everybody counts on, you can fade into the background of your own life without ever noticing it happen.

Not unhappy, exactly. Just somewhere toward the back of the room. A little invisible.

An hour with this list brings you up to the forefront of your own life. To you.

It isn’t a system and it won’t fix anything. It just puts you back in the room.

A few of mine, if you get stuck

I have been making this list for fifteen years. Some of what’s on mine:

Feeling beautiful. A really great ribeye. Peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream. Cooking for appreciative someones. Spending uninterrupted time in the presence of God.

Now forget mine. Mine won’t do a thing for you, and that is rather the point.

If you want somewhere to go looking, there are three doors around here.

In the kitchen — Roasted Spaghetti Squash with Sausage & Peppers Marinara.

At the mirror — Makeup Over 50. You are already beautiful. The makeup is just the enhancer.

In the quiet — Start With God, Not Your Phone.

And one bonus, much later

Put the date at the top. Do another one next season, and another after that.

Years from now you’ll have a stack of them, and they will tell you things about yourself you couldn’t have told anyone at the time. But that is a bonus. It is not why you do it.

You do it for the hour.

Grab the drink. Find the chair.

Find out what you love — for the first time, or the first time in a long time. Go on, beautiful.
